Make That Commute Accountable

It’s not your personal free time and it’s not on the payroll either, it’s kind of time in limbo! Check out these five ideas to make that commute accountable, and maybe even something you look forward to.

Recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that the average Australian travels 16 kilometres from their home to their workplace. Whether you’re traveling around the corner within the Kinbrook community or across the city, going by car, bike or public transport, in our, commuting can feel like ‘dead-time’. It’s not your personal free time and it’s not on the payroll either, it’s kind of time in limbo! Check out these five ideas to make that commute accountable, and maybe even something you look forward to.

Apps

While there is a lot of speculation that as a society we are addicted to our smart devices. We can’t exist, think for ourselves, communicate, tell the time, and more without devices, they can also be used for the greater good. Use your public transport commute to exercise your brain with apps like Brainsparker, to inspire creative thinking or Elevate to sharpen your focus.

Plan and reflect

Fail to plan and plan to fail the old saying goes - it’s time to put that commute to good use. Whether you’re driving to work or on the train, get into the routine of setting some goals for the day ahead. On the return trip, be disciplined to reflect on your work day, what was achieved, how to approach the next day differently, or maybe it was perfect and worth repeating!

Chill out

The mobile office might add to career flexibility but it also contributes to our struggle to disconnect from the workplace. Always checking emails, logging in and doing a few hours here and there. What about if we could actually achieve more during the day so we didn’t feel the need to be always live? The answer is to use your journey to and from work to switch off, listen to music or a pod cast, or if you’re on the train it’s time to snooze.

Nourish

Apparently it’s the most important meal of the day, but who wants to get up an hour early to make sure you’ve ticked that box? The answer is to use the morning commute to make sure you’re set up sustenance-wise for a big day ahead. Grab something to go on the way, or get organised and prepare an on-trend bircher muesli the night before - you’ll be the envy of the train commute!

Learn Something New

With our busy lives, packing so much in, it’s easy to forget to invest in ourselves from time to time. Use the train trip to read a book, try a non-fiction edition to learn something new, about something different. If the car is your transport, try an audio book running through your speakers. You’ll soon find your commute is much shorter than you thought, and you may even look forward to it.
